Compassion

Compassion is a Christlike feeling of love and concern for others that moves us to give of ourselves. Jesus Christ, our perfect exemplar, consistently demonstrated love through acts of compassion. His gifts were in the form of personal attention. We can likewise give personal attention to the lonely, the sick, the depressed, the frightened, and the hungry by tuning our hearts to their needs and by reaching out in love and in aid. Attributes of the compassionate person are patience, tenderness, forbearance, forgiveness, and mercy.

"What power, what tenderness, what compassion did our Master and Exemplar thus demonstrate! We, too, can bless if we will but follow His noble example. Opportunities are everywhere. Needed are eyes to see the pitiable plight and ears to hear the silent pleadings of a broken heart. Yes, and a soul filled with compassion, that we might communicate not only eye to eye or voice to ear but, in the majestic style of the Savior, even heart to heart" (Thomas S. Monson, Ensign, May 1991, 61).
