To consecrate is to commit possessions to a higher cause. Latter-day Saints covenant to live the law of consecration, including the giving of time, talents, strength, property, and money to help build up the kingdom of God on earth and to establish His purposes. Latter-day Saints prepare themselves to live this law as they pay tithing and fast offerings, go on missions, and make other contributions of money, service, and time.
"For a man to consecrate, is nothing more nor less than to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the widow and the fatherless, the sick, and the afflicted, and do all he can to administer to their relief in their afflictions, and for him and his house to serve the Lord" (Joseph Smith, in History of the Church, 3:230231).
