In helping those around us, we help ourselves. Reaching out to those less fortunate and sacrificing our resources in their behalf causes us to become more compassionate and Christlike. In Isaiah, the Lord promises wonderful blessings to those who "deal thy bread to the hungry, bring the poor that are cast out to thy house [and] seest the naked, that thou cover him" (Isaiah 58: 7). They are promises of health, answers to prayers, abundance, and the continual guidance of the Lord (see Isaiah 58:811).
"We lose our life by serving and lifting others. By so doing we experience the only true and lasting happiness. Service is not something we endure on this earth so we can earn the right to live in the celestial kingdom. Service is the very fiber of which an exalted life in the celestial kingdom is made" (Marion G. Romney, Ensign, Nov. 1982, 93).
