Preparing for Emergencies Church Preparedness Church leaders have the responsibility to plan and organize so they can help individual members and their families to prepare and respond to emergencies. Effective preparation includes three steps: Teaching personal and family preparedness. The primary responsibility to prepare for and respond to emergencies rests with individual members and families. However, ward welfare committees, priesthood quorums, Relief Society meetings, and home and visiting teaching provide ideal opportunities to teach members the principles of home production and storage, first aid, and other steps that will help them to prepare. Written emergency plans. Each stake and ward should have a brief, written plan that outlines steps to be taken if an emergency occurs. Guidelines for Preparation of Ward and Stake Emergency Plans can be downloaded from this site. Emergency communication. Communication during an emergency is essential to provide relief to victims of disasters. Each stake and ward should establish the means to communicate when telephones and other means are not available. Stakes should have the ability to communicate with the nearest bishops' storehouse (in countries where they exist) or with the area office. |
