Preparing for Emergencies Emergency Response Church leaders guide the planning and response to natural and man-made disasters. They encourage Church members to prepare for problems that may arise. They use the existing Church organization and the councils of the Church to teach other leaders and members their duties. Bishops use Church welfare resources including fast offerings to help members affected by emergencies, following the guidelines for providing in the Lord’s way. Church leaders defer to civic officials in directing emergency response efforts. "We must do more to get our people prepared for the difficult days we face in the future. Our major concern should be their spiritual preparation so they will respond with faith and not fear. 'If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear' (D&C 38:30). Our next concern should be their temporal preparation" (Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, 264). |
