Church Welfare Operations Bishops' Storehouse A bishops’ storehouse contains a supply of food commodities and household supplies to be used by the bishop in caring for needy members of his ward. Many of the commodities are produced by Church members on production projects. Each storehouse has a shopping area and accompanying warehouse. While these storehouses provide many of the same services as any retail food store, not one has a cash register. The only way a person can obtain commodities from a storehouse is through a bishop’s order. There are over 100 bishops’ storehouses that support bishops by distributing food and supplies to the poor and needy. Where a storehouse is not available, bishops can purchase needed commodities from local merchants using fast offerings. Bishops’ storehouses provide work opportunities for those receiving welfare assistance, training for those needing improved work skills, and opportunities for members to donate labor to help others. "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it" (Malachi 3:10). |
