Sheltered Workshop

A sheltered workshop is a facility that employs people with disabilities at a rate of pay lower than the federal minimum wage. The United States Department of Labor issues a sheltered workshop certificate to the facility and authorizes wages below the federal minimum wage. Sub-minimum wages are paid only to workers with documented disabilities that hinder them from performing at the standard expected in competitive employment. Some workers in sheltered workshops remain for extended periods and may remain throughout their entire work lives. Deseret Industries is licensed by the federal government to provide sheltered workshop services to the needy.
