Church Welfare Operations

Latter-day Saint Humanitarian Center
Beginning many decades ago, and accelerating in the mid-1980s, the Church has provided food, clothing, blankets, and other essential items worldwide to help reduce suffering caused by natural disasters, wars, and other difficulties. In 1991, the Latter-day Saint Humanitarian Center was developed by Deseret Industries to help gather, prepare, and distribute clothing, medical equipment, and educational supplies to those in need throughout the world. Funding comes from voluntary donations by Church members and others. One hundred percent of the donations are given to those in need.
Many of the resources available through the Humanitarian Center are made or processed by volunteers. They include hygiene kits, school kits, newborn kits, computers, textbooks, and supplies. As with other Deseret Industries’ operations, employed trainees assist in the production. The Humanitarian Center provides a rehabilitation program to help trainees learn marketable skills and find jobs in the community. Trainees are also provided the opportunity to learn English as a second language.
