Relief Society

Introduction

The Relief Society is a worldwide organization for women. It was founded in 1842 by the Prophet Joseph Smith when a few women came to him seeking a way for the women of the Church to be organized to practice charity and help build the kingdom of God. Objectives of the Relief Society include increasing women’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, strengthening marriages and families, exercising charity, and nurturing those in need. The motto of the Relief Society is "Charity never faileth." Charity is the pure love of Christ, and Relief Society affords many opportunities for women to develop and exercise this love in behalf of those in need.

"You will receive instructions through the order of the priesthood which God has established, through the medium of those appointed to lead, guide and direct the affairs of the Church in this last dispensation; and I now turn the key in your behalf in the name of the Lord, and this Society shall rejoice, and knowledge and intelligence shall flow down from this time henceforth; this is the beginning of better days to the poor and needy who shall be made to rejoice and pour forth blessings on your heads" (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, 4:607).

"The Ladies' Relief Society is not only to relieve the poor, but to save souls" (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, 5:25).
