Relief Society Serve on Ward Welfare Committee The ward welfare committee consists of the bishop, who is the chairman, the priesthood executive committee, the Relief Society presidency, the ward executive secretary and ward clerk, and others invited by the bishopric, such as ward welfare specialists. The Relief Society presidency gives input (often gathered from visiting teaching reports or presidency meetings) as they discuss current spiritual and temporal needs, coordinate efforts to help specific ward members, plan how to prevent future welfare needs by teaching welfare principles, and discuss emergency preparedness (Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2, 318). "Remember that the purpose of having women involved in our councils is to get their input on the weightier matters of the Church" (M. Russell Ballard, Counseling with Our Councils, 93). "The work of our wonderful women is vital. . . . It is extremely important for stake and ward councils and committees to consistently concern themselves with issues that affect families, women, youth, and children. These issues should be a regular part of the agenda of these meetings, and our women leaders should take part in the discussions. . . . Please do not overlook the strength that can and does come from our women" (Marvin J. Ashton, address to Regional Representatives, 31 Mar. 1989, 2) |
