Relief Society

Give Compassionate Service
When the Prophet Joseph Smith founded the Relief Society in 1842 for "the relief of the poor, the destitute, the widow and the orphan, and for the exercise of all benevolent purposes" (in History of the Church, 4:567), he set the pattern for compassionate service for which the Relief Society has always been acclaimed. In countless acts of individual service to the needy, Relief Society women have demonstrated their motto, "Charity Never Faileth." Compassionate service takes an infinite variety of forms, including child care, elderly care, tutoring and literacy instruction, care to new mothers and new-born infants, nursing and home care, and transportation. By the cumulative impact of countless individual acts, Relief Society has become a worldwide force for good.
"The greatest temporal and spiritual blessings which always come from faithfulness and concerted effort, never attended individual exertion or enterprise" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 183).
