Assign Visiting Teachers

Visiting teachers are assigned by the Relief Society president under the direction of the bishop and in consultation with her counselors. After prayerfully seeking the Lord’s guidance, they assign Relief Society sisters to be visiting teachers—considering such factors as distance, transportation, safety, and special needs—matching the needs of the sister to the resources and abilities of the sisters assigned. Among the purposes of visiting teaching is to seek out those who are in need where the temporal and spiritual resources of the Church might be helpful. They report each month on the spiritual and temporal well-being of each sister. (See Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2, 203)

"My desire is to plead with our sisters to stop worrying about a phone call or a quarterly or monthly visit, and whether that will do, and concentrate instead on nurturing tender souls. Our responsibility is to see that the gospel flame continues to burn brightly" (Mary Ellen Smoot, Ensign, Nov. 1997, 12).
