Relief Society Make Family Needs Visits The bishop may assign the Relief Society president to visit members who need welfare assistance. She evaluates members’ needs and suggests how to respond to them. She may also help in completing a bishop's order for goods and services form for the bishop to review and sign. To determine a family’s needs, the Relief Society president evaluates the family’s resources. Does the family have a garden, animals for food, or storage items? She then assesses the following areas of potential need and reports them to the bishop: Food. She considers eating habits of the family. Food quantities and varieties should be adequate but not to exceed normal family needs. Clothing. She discusses with the sister the sources of clothing for the family. Health. If a family member has a serious health problem, the Relief Society president gives this information to the bishop. Household Furnishings and Supplies. She determines if the family needs more home furnishings or items that are necessary for preparing and preserving food. Social and Emotional Needs. If the family needs help with social or emotional concerns, she reports this to the bishop. The bishop directs the Relief Society president in fulfilling her welfare responsibilities. She keeps confidential any information she obtains during a family needs visit or in conversations with the bishop. "Behold, I say unto you, that ye must visit the poor and the needy and administer to their relief" (D&C 44:6). |
