Literacy

Literacy is the ability to read, write, and perform basic math—enabling a person to function meaningfully in modern society. Without literacy, it is difficult to preach the gospel, read the sacred scriptures, raise the standard of health, or help people to help themselves by improving their economic status, living standards, sanitary standards, and so on. An ability to read and write enables people to understand their temporal and spiritual problems and ways to solve them. Furthermore, it helps them to solve practical, everyday problems at the household and community level. The Church can direct individuals to programs that foster literacy.

"We live in a world where knowledge is developing at an ever-accelerating rate. Drink deeply from this ever-springing well of wisdom and human experience. If you should stop now, you will only stunt your intellectual and spiritual growth. Keep everlastingly at it. Read. Read. Read. Read the word of God in sacred books of scripture. Read from the great literature of the ages. Read what is being said in our day and time and what will be said in the future" (Gordon B. Hinckley, Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley, 171).
