Service is an act of assistance performed to benefit others. Jesus is the supreme example of service, freely caring for the sick and afflicted. He taught us the exalted nature of service when he said, "Whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant" (Matthew 20:27). Latter-day Saints believe that in serving others, we serve God, and that it is our responsibility to seek out those in need and care for them as the Savior would. Opportunities for service are all around us in our homes, neighborhoods, churches, and communities.
"A member of the Church is to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to provide for the widow, to dry up the tear of the orphan, to comfort the afflicted, whether in this church, or in any other, or in no church at all wherever he finds them" (Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, 15 Mar. 1842, 732).
