The Church has produced many helpful materials that enable leaders, teachers, and parents to understand and teach important welfare principles. They include videos, pamphlets, books, and handbooks. Copies of these materials can be ordered through the Church's online Distribution Center. Selected items are available to be viewed online. Those materials presently available are hyperlinked in the list below.

Books

Pure Religion: The Story of Church Welfare Since 1930 (35247). Introduced 1995, 415 pages, 250 photographs.

Videos

Essentials of Welfare (53045), compilation of six Church welfare videos, including "Caring for the Needy." Introduced 1989, 93 minutes.

Pure Religion (53984), overview of Church welfare programs and purposes. Introduced 2002,15 minutes.

In the Service of Your God - DVD (54645), a collection of 18 video presentations to be used as a resource to help members and Church leaders learn and apply welfare principles. The four hours of video range from 3 to 32 minutes and are divided into three sections: 1) Learning and applying welfare principles, 2) General Conference addresses on welfare, and 3) Materials to assist Church leaders. In the Service of Your God - VHS (53645), compilation of two Church welfare videos, including "Pure Religion" an overview of Church welfare programs and purposes and "Ye Have Done It Unto Me", an overview of Church humanitarian efforts throughout the world. Introduced 2003, 26 minutes.

Deseret Industries: More Than a Thrift Store (53971), explains how Deseret Industries donations are used. Introduced 2000, 6 minutes.

Pamphlets and Handbooks

Basic Self-Reliance (32293), basic lessons to improve health, sanitation, and nutrition. Introduced 1989, 152 pages.

Caring for the Needy (32294), a training course for bishops in teaching and administering welfare within the ward. Introduced 1989, 10 pages.

Church Welfare Resources for Use in the United States and Canada–revised edition (34475), instructions for using Church welfare services for priesthood and Relief Society leaders. It outlines services available in bishops’ storehouses, home storage centers, and canneries, and through Deseret Industries, LDS Employment Resource Services, and LDS Family Services. Revised in 2005, this publication is 3 pages and not available from Church Distribution.

Instructional Resources for Welfare Trainers a training resource for stake and ward welfare coucils and committees and stake bishops’ welfare councils. The lessons teach spiritual and temporal welfare principles and the responsibilities of bishops, Melchizedek Priesthood leaders, and Relief Society leaders. This manual is available for download and printing Introduced in 2004, 51 pages.

Career Workshop Materials The Career Workshop teaches proven job skills that will help members make good first impressions and be more competitive. It is designed to assist people from all backgrounds and skill levels to find work, enroll in school, or improve a small business.

Career Tool Pass along card is used to invite members to participate in The Career Workshop.

Deseret Industries: More Than a Thrift Store (35533), explains how donations to Deseret Industries are used. Introduced 1998.

One for the Money (33293), simple strategies and tools for budgeting, reducing debt, and saving for a happier, more fulfilling life. Introduced 1992 and revised in 2006, 12 pages.

Providing in the Lord's Way: Summary of A Leader's Guide to Welfare 2009, 10 pages. This booklet is a summary of basic welfare principles and elements of self-reliance for priesthood and Relief Society leaders. Additional information is available in the full version of Providing in the Lord's Way (see below).

Pure Religion (35510), overview of Church welfare and humanitarian service with emphasis on how the reader can become involved. Introduced 2001, 21 pages, four colors.

Relief Society (35703), Section 3 of Book 2, Church Handbook of Instructions, outlines purpose, objectives, organization, and activities of Relief Society. 19 pages.

Responding to Abuse (32248), helps for ecclesiastical leaders who encounter situations of abuse, with instructions for reporting. Introduced 1995, six pages.

Spiritual and Temporal Welfare (35708), Section 8 of Book 2, Church Handbook of Instructions, emphasizing the roles of Church leaders and councils in helping to foster self-reliance and caring for the needy. Introduced 1998, seven pages.

Understanding and Helping Those Who Have Homosexual Problems (32250), suggestions for leaders who are trying to help members who have homosexual thoughts and feelings to avoid or overcome homosexual behaviors and establish appropriate relationships. Introduced 1992, six pages.

Forms

Career Assessment and Plan (31485) a form used by Church Leaders and employment specialists to assess candidates needs regarding employment, education opportunities, or self-employment and track their progress.

Needs and Resources Analysis: Self-Reliance Plan (32290), a form used by bishops, Relief Society presidents and welfare specialists to help families plan for and become self-reliant.

Needs and Resources Analysis Supplement (32291). This form should be used by Church leaders when the amount of assistance involved exceeds $2500 and should be completed to:

  1. Analyze individual and family needs.
  2. Identify individual and family needs.
  3. Identify additional needed resources and how such will be provided.
  4. Make work assignments so that the recipient of Church assistance may work to the extent of his or her ability for commodities, services, or funds received.
