Question:

Can a bishop help those who are not members of the Church?

Answer:

Bishops may assist those living within their ward boundaries as prompted by the spirit. Such assistance sometimes reaches families that include those of other faiths. When a bishop assists those who are not members of the Church, he should be careful to follow approved guidelines, including:

 • Seek to build the needy spiritually and temporally.
 • Provide temporary, life-sustaining assistance.
 • Give goods or services where possible, before giving cash.
 • Assign work for the assistance received.
 • Confer with the stake president to ensure that proper principles are being applied.
