Question:
How do members serve others outside the Church?
Answer:
Members of the Church are encouraged to give service in the home, the Church, the neighborhood, and the community. For example, in 2001, members donated more than 475,000 days of labor to Church welfare facilities alone. Service is given without regard to race, religion, or national origin. They serve in schools, local governments, and countless community agencies. Members also donate generously of their financial resources to help the needy of all nations. From 1985 to 2001, more than $73 million were donated to the Church humanitarian fund, enabling the Church to distribute 216,600 tons of materials assistance to needy and disaster-stricken citizens of 147 countries.
"Let us reach out to help men and women of goodwill, whatever their religious persuasion and wherever they live" (Gordon B. Hinckley, Ensign, Nov. 2001, 74).
