Children with special needs range from infants up to 18 years. In general, children with special needs are those who may have one or more of the following:
- Physical or health problems
- History of abuse or neglect
- Emotional problems
- Siblings placed together
- Documented conditions that may lead to significant future problems
- Prenatal exposure to drugs or alcohol
Couples wishing to adopt a child or children with special needs would need to meet the same criteria as those wishing to adopt a healthy infant, with the following additional considerations:
- A couple's age may determine the age of the child(ren) they are eligible to adopt.
- Parents should possess the specialized skills and attributes necessary to handle the particular emotional or physical needs of the child or children (training is often available).
- An openness to be involved with outside agencies and resources which can assist in the difficult transitional periods often associated with special needs adoption
Special Needs Adoption is a difficult yet rewarding way of providing a quality family environment for children who have or will experience challenges in their lives.
