Articles on Eating Disorders

The following articles contain information on the topic of Eating Disorders. We encourage you to contact one of our offices for additional assistance.

"For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7).

Eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating, have reached epidemic levels in America in all segments of society, irrespective of race and culture. It is estimated that there are at least 8 million victims of this disorder in the United States alone, with 6 % of serious cases resulting in death. There are few adequate programs or services to treat this disorder. The cost of inpatient and outpatient care is high. Eating disorders can lead to lifelong health problems, immeasurable suffering for victims and families, and even death.

"Eating Disorders: A Deadly State of Mind"

Eating disorders are a symptom of other problems, often tied to attitudes such as low self-esteem and feeling that life is out of control. Anorexia and bulimia do more than just distort your view of reality. They keep you from seeing yourself as the Lord sees you.

"One Being is as Precious in His Sight as Another"
In a devotional address at Brigham Young University, Sister Lockhart testifies that every one is precious in the sight of God, for we are His offspring. She suggests six absolute truths that are the basis for a genuine, real, stable, and secure self. She concludes by stating, “These are virtues we do not need to earn, nor, in fact, can we earn. They are gifts from God. They are the essence of our being. If we truly trusted these absolutes, nothing else would matter enough.”
