Family therapy is the practice of treating psychological problems in the context of the family. The problems may be the result of dysfunctional interactions between family members or the transmission of maladaptive behavior patterns from ones family of origin. Therapeutic approaches may focus on facilitating coping skills, developing autonomy, and helping family members to learn new patterns of interaction and responses. The goal of therapy is to empower families by increasing the quality of coping strategies and the quantity of family interactions. |
