Self-Esteem, Self-Worth

"Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God" (D&C 18:10).
Self-worth is the view or picture that one has of oneself as a competent, worthy, and lovable individual. Worth was given to every individual in the pre-mortal existence. That worth will continue only if the spirit is nurtured. Unfortunately the vicissitudes of this earth life may prohibit many from receiving the nurture they need. As a result, there are many who feel isolated, lonely, depressed, and anxious. Some become pleasers and underachievers, while others remain passive or become aggressive and cause havoc in their relationships. |

"A Place within His Heart"
In a devotional address given at Brigham Young University, Sister Sharon G. Samuelson spoke on the importance of understanding the worth of each individual soul. She states, “The world in which we live today tells us that our sense of worth is based upon what is seen or accomplished. We are measured by possessions and wealth, physical appearance and dress styles, social status and achievements. Too many of us strive to gain acceptance using these standards, trying to enhance the perception of our worth by those who are part of our lives as well as those who view us from afar. If we are not careful, we can let others determine and establish our standards and feelings of self-worth. We can become someone else’s image of success rather than our own.” Sister Samuelson suggests that a sense of worth can be strengthened by “being dignified in the lives we lead and by following the teachings of our Lord, Jesus Christ.”

"Here Am I, Send Me"
In a devotional address given at Brigham Young University, Elder M. Russell Ballard spoke on the sacred nature of womanhood. He states, “More than ever before we need women of faith, virtue, vision, and charity, as the Relief Society declaration proclaims. We need women who can hear and who will respond to the voice of the Lord, women who at all costs will defend and protect the family. We don't need women who want to be like men, sound like men, dress like men, drive like some men drive, or act like men. We do need women who rejoice in their womanhood and have a spiritual confirmation of their identity, their value, and their eternal destiny. Above all, we need women who will stand up for truth and righteousness and decry evil at every turn and simply say, 'Lord, here am I, send me.'"
